What Size Coffee Machine Does Your Trade Counter Actually Need?

When choosing a coffee machine for a trade counter, bigger isn't always better.

The right machine is the one that can comfortably handle your customers and staff without taking up unnecessary space or creating extra work.

How many coffees will you make?

Start with an estimate of your daily usage.

Think about:

  • How many customers visit each day?

  • How many staff will use it?

  • Will customers pay for coffee or is it free?

  • When are your busiest periods?

A small trade counter making 10–20 drinks a day has very different requirements from a busy branch making 100.

Don't just look at daily volume

Peak demand matters too.

If most coffees are being made between 8am and 10am, the machine needs to be able to dispense quickly and cope with several drinks in succession.

For a trade counter, speed can be just as important as capacity. Customers generally want their coffee and then want to get back on the road or to site.

How much space do you have?

Counter space is valuable, so measure the area before choosing a machine.

Remember to allow room for cups, ingredients and cleaning, as well as access to the machine itself.

A compact machine can often be a much better fit than a large machine with features you don't actually need.

Do you need plumbing?

Not necessarily. Some commercial machines connect directly to a mains water supply, while others use a water tank. If plumbing isn't available at your counter, a tank-fed machine can give you much more flexibility over where you install it.

The right machine, not the biggest machine

Ultimately, choosing a coffee machine is about matching the machine to the environment.

Consider your daily usage, busiest periods, available space, water supply and how much staff involvement you want.

A machine that is too small can become a nuisance. One that is unnecessarily large can waste valuable counter space and money.

The best machine for your trade counter is simply the one that does the job you need it to do.
