How Fast Should a Trade Counter Coffee Machine Be?
When someone walks into a trade counter, they usually have somewhere else to be.
They might be picking up a few materials before heading to a job, collecting an order, or waiting for something to be loaded. If they want a coffee while they're there, they don't want to spend five minutes waiting for it.
So how fast should a trade counter coffee machine actually be?
Speed matters more than you might think
A coffee machine doesn't just need to make a good drink. It needs to fit into the way a trade counter operates.
At quieter times of the day, a few extra seconds probably don't matter. But at 8am, when several customers arrive at once, they can quickly add up.
If each person is waiting around for their coffee, you've created another queue.
For a trade counter, the aim should be simple: get a decent cup of coffee into the customer's hands quickly and let them get on with their day.
What counts as fast?
There are different ways of measuring the speed of a coffee machine.
Some manufacturers will quote a dispense time, but that's only part of the story. What matters to the customer is the time from pressing the button to having a finished drink they can actually take away.
For a busy trade counter, I'd be looking for a machine that can dispense the drink in around 12 seconds or less.
That gives the customer a quick experience without requiring a large or complicated machine.
Of course, the actual time will depend on the drink being made and the machine being used, but it's a useful figure to have in mind when comparing machines.
Think about your busiest time of day
One of the mistakes people make when choosing a coffee machine is looking at average usage.
If your trade counter serves 30 coffees a day, that doesn't necessarily tell you much.
When are those 30 coffees being made?
If most of them are between 7:30am and 9:00am, you need a machine that can cope with that period rather than one that simply looks suitable based on the daily total.
The same applies to the size of your counter and the number of people using it.
A machine that works perfectly in a small merchant with a handful of customers at a time may not be suitable for a much busier branch.
Speed isn't everything
There is no point having a very fast machine if the coffee isn't enjoyable.
The machine needs to produce a consistent drink, be straightforward to use and be easy for staff to keep clean.
For most trade counters, you don't need a complicated coffee setup.
You need something that works.
A customer presses a button, gets their coffee quickly and can carry on with their day.
So, how fast should your machine be?
There isn't one answer that will suit every trade counter.
But if you're choosing a machine, I'd consider around 12 seconds or less for dispensing a drink a good starting point.
Then look at the bigger picture: how many people will use it, when they'll use it, how much counter space you have and how easy the machine is to clean.
The best machine for a trade counter isn't necessarily the biggest or the most complicated.
It's the one that fits the counter, makes a good drink and doesn't make customers wait around for it.
